William K. Shearer, R.I.P.

I wish I had time, to blog like I used to... or even half as much as I used to. Back when my blogging was better, I was posting a lot (on my main weblog) on the issue of war and foreign policy. Because I wanted an archive of those entries published before the current war began, I started this secondary blog. However, this top post now serves as a place where I can post updates and links, about recent events.

If you look through those pre-war blog entries of mine, you can see that two of them mention William K. Shearer, a constititutionalist conservative writer, and former Chairman of the U.S. Taxpayers Party (now known as the Constitution Party).

He was first mentioned in my Nov. 19, 2002 entry, in which I linked to his thought-provoking column written in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks (addressed further below). And my famous listing of conservative columnists who opposed the Iraq War [which I remember caught the eye of antiwar conservative political activist Mark Dankof, who I just discovered now hosts a radio show - with podcast links] includes Mr. Shearer; that link went to another of his columns, which had been e-mailed to me by California constitutionalist Reed Heustis.

William K. Shearer, R.I.P.

Mr. Shearer passed away on March 3rd of this year, in San Diego, at the age of 75. The postings here and here, at non-partisan, and non-ideologically aligned, websites, show that he meant a great deal to many people, and will be sorely missed.

This continues the trend I fearfully addressed in my birthday tribute to the [still-living!] Joseph Sobran (and my shocked reaction to the recently-deceased Jude Wanniski) about the fact that our nation, and our movement (of genuine conservatism) now seems to be losing its key figures. [I guess this makes sense somewhat, since it is called the "Old" Right.] James Lawrence Kris Wampler But this further reinforces the points that myself, and people such as James Lawrence, Kris Wampler, Francisco Gonzalez, Michael Brendan Dougherty, Adam Fierro, Kevin DeAnna, Craig Burgers, Marcus Epstein, and our friends in Michigan and elsewhere (including D.C.!) have been making, about the importance of promoting traditionalist conservatism within the people of our generation - in opposition to the statist, neocon mindset that has been prevalent (though thankfully, not so much anymore, despite the article by our friend Mr. McCarthy - see the 7th paragraph of my latest blog entry).

Congressman Ron Paul for President 2008 Update (6/6/07): I guess I should have included Jared Chicoine, above!

Update (5/28/07): I just realized that the Old Right has actually collapsed once before, due in part to the passing of several of its key national leaders.

We were able to resurrect it though, after the Cold War ended... At the start of 1992, even Murray Rothbard proclaimed, "...the Old Right is suddenly back!", and actually rejoined the Republican Party, to support Pat Buchanan's energetic challenge to the incumbent GOP President. And, as I've written before, the Clinton Presidency caused many conservatives and leading Republicans to become anti-war and anti-state - including among the youth.

Some thought that traditionalist conservatism was dead again however, due to how poorly Pat Buchanan did, in his 2000 run for President. It was only a couple of years later however, that it began to re-emerge, and now, even some of the CRs and conservatives of my generation are being impacted by the traditionalist perspectives, not only on immigration, but on foreign policy as well (as alluded to above).

I guess this may be a somewhat reassuring sign, that even if a movement fades away, due to the passing of its major leaders, that it can be brought back.

Note (6/16/04): I've been quite busy, with various things, some of which I've mentioned at my blog. I spent much of last week paying my respects to Ronald Wilson Reagan, the greatest president of our time. (I will have some more material on President Reagan up at my blog soon, including some on President Reagan's foreign policy, and how it was actually quite different from the interventionist foreign policy of this administration... Some of the material in the lower part of this post contains perspectives from Reagan administration officials about the Iraq war, and the current foreign policy situation.)

I also have posted an entry at my main blog congratulating former President George H. W. Bush on his 80th birthday. The Bush 41 adminstration's foreign policy was also very different from the foreign policy that this administration has ended up following, and many key members of the Bush 41 administration probably did not support this war. It is believed by some that Bush 41 himself opposed this war, which may have created a division between him and his son. (Former President Bush's displeasure over his son's foreign policy could be a reason why he last year, in a move that surprised some of my fellow conservatives, chose to bestow the award that bears his name to none other than... Senator Ted Kennedy.)

I wanted to note here some interesting news that has recently been reported - It seems that many supporters of the Iraq war are having doubts about the wisdom of it, and have been questioning the administration's policies in that country. I mention - above and below - that many members of the Reagan and Bush 41 administrations expressed opposition to the Iraq war, but now, some of those who seem to be questioning this war are actually from the Bush 43 administration... Secretary of State Powell has recently been attempting to distance himself from the war, and has claimed that deliberate deception was used to make the case for it.

An increasing number of conservatives and Republicans are criticizing the Bush administration's Iraq policy, and are having doubts about whether the war was the right thing to do. But, as I've been pointing out for awhile now, many of us opposed this war from the start, and more and more Americans - conservatives, liberals, Republicans, Democrats, and others - are recognizing that we were correct to do so.

I noted below that I have decided to use this top entry of this blog to provide recent news and viewpoints... This blog was originally started, however, to be an archive of my past (pre-March 2003) main blog entries that had to do with war and foreign policy. Well, Spring Break is over, and school has begun again. And so has the war. I had been wanting to post updates about the war, but this is the first time that I am blogging since it began last Wednesday (March 19th).

I definitely wanted to say some things about the start of this war. It is important now that all of us - whether we have supported the idea of going to war with Iraq, or whether we have opposed it - stand behind our brave and heroic troops 100%, and pray for their security, their fortitude and faith, and their safe and speedy return after a successful mission abroad.

College Conservatives
Before I left for the convention (see my last entry), I was going to post some of the following:

In a comment post on Owen Courreges' blog, I wrote something about the differing views of college conservatives and Republicans with respect to a war with Iraq. (See the comments here by scrolling down to the bottom of the list.) Adrianne Truett shared on that discussion board that the conservatives at Harvard were also divided on this issue; she provided a link to The Harvard Salient, their "semi-conservative" student newspaper. After those comment posts, Owen posted an entry entitled "Taking on the anti-war Right" - it contains a response to this article by Salient editor Gladden J. Pappin.

Here are some viewpoints on war from college conservatives (and other non-leftists):

NOTE: As I have said in previous posts: External links to articles and web pages from this blog are intended for reference and debate purposes only; I am not necessarily endorsing or agreeing with the viewpoints and the content of web pages that are linked to from this site. (In some cases, I haven't even had a chance to read through all of the pages.)

More on Republicans
I had earlier come across this news report about Jack Walters, the Chairman of the Republican Party of Boone County, Missouri. I especially liked this quote at the end of the article:

Boone County GOP Chairman under fire for anti-war stance [also posted here]
"Not everybody who is opposed to the war is over on the left wing. It goes beyond the loony left and the usual suspects. There's a broad spectrum of opposition."
- William Samuels, former GOP committee member

The other day, I found out that Mr. Walters is resigning his position as Boone County GOP Chairman in protest of the potential Iraq war. His statement of resignation has been posted on the web. And there is even an online petition that Democrats.com has started to correspond with this: Republicans Against War in Iraq. I don't think I'm going to sign, since it's at a Democratic site; it already has 54 signatures, though...

Update: A Letter to the Editor for Mr. Walters on this issue.

And speaking of war and resignations, the latest post at Hoosier Review is an interesting comment about this subject.

More on these issues, and other topics, will be posted soon. For now, good luck to all who have mid-terms this week...

On the Europeans

........

Much has been made of the refusal of some European countries (namely, France and Germany) to join the war coalition against Iraq, and of the agreement of several other European nations (U.K., Poland, Hungary, Spain - see the 'honor roll' at the left sidebar of HokiePundit's blog) to do so. Many people, especially the neocon commentators, have released a barrage of harsh criticisms against the anti-war countries. There is actually an entire blog dedicated to "France bashing," and also see FranceStinks.com and GermanyStinks.com. At Aage's Pizza, the Danish owner refused to sell food to French and German customers. And at one North Carolina restaurant, the "french fries" are now called "freedom fries."

But are the French, Germans (and the other countries who oppose the war) onto something?

Neocon francophobe Jonah Goldberg recently revealed something that he claims resulted from a Google search. (It was posted at National Review's Corner, then linked to from Hoosier Review and other blogs.) When he entered French military victories into Google, this is what Mr. Goldberg claims was the result. (Update: See correction below.) It would, in fact, be very amusing if this were true; however, I personally find this hard to believe. Google is known as the most powerful search engine, and when I enter that phrase, it shows more than 57,000 results. Even with "quotation marks" around the phrase, it still yields over 100 hits. (Though some of these hits may be for websites discussing this issue, many of the web pages that the query turns up were on the internet before this story started circulating.)

UPDATE - Correction: When I wrote that above, I had tried to find a link to Jonah's pertinent post on The Corner. Because NR's search engine did not turn it up (the text of the search was actually not in his blog entry), however, I was not able to. I have now found it. (Thanks, Chris!) As it turns out, it wasn't Goldberg who entered that phrase into Google; it was sent to him by a reader. After he posted it, it was linked to from Hoosier Review, and has also appeared at several other places. (See it in actual full screen form here or here.) Apparently, even Geoff Metcalf, Neal Boortz, and Professor Volokh believed it. I was wondering earlier why no one had challenged this claim, and just accepted it as fact, but I just noticed that Brian Weatherson has provided a good analysis of this whole thing here and here.

Here is something from the latest issue of The American Conservative:

SURRENDER MONKEYS?

- Number of French dead in World War II through June 1940: 120,000
- Number of American dead in Korean and Vietnam Wars combined: 95,000
- Rhetorical value of the fiction of French cowardice: priceless

(I guess there are somethings that money can't buy... For everything else, there are the lies of war.)

Some insight on those darn Europeans:
- The French are No Cowards (a history lesson) - new!
- Vive la France! (Lafayette would agree...)
- Learning from the School of Experience
- The Anti-Europeans
- Nuke France
- Why the French behave as they do
- Those Shameful French - new!

Pro-War Commies?

And here's something else. Several bloggers have commented on the influence of radical left-wingers, socialists, and communists in the anti-war movement. International A.N.S.W.E.R., which is connected to the Workers World Party, is one of the groups that is the subject of much of this criticism. The critics are are correct in stating that many of these types of people do appear to be the leaders in some of the organized protest against the war, and this is a very bad thing. These people are a huge embarrassment and a major liability to the anti-war cause. (It is because of this type of influence in the visible anti-war movement that this blog has been putting so much emphasis on the conservatives and libertarians who are opposing the war.)

However, there is one thing that those critical of the anti-war movement are overlooking. While there are radical leftists, socialists, and communists in the anti-war movement, the pro-war movement has plenty of those guys too. And unlike the anti-war movement, the pro-war movement's commies and socialists actually hold positions of power and lead the governments of several European countries.

In late January, the heads of state of eight European countries (Spain, Portugal, the U.K., the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Denmark ) signed a unity statement indicating support for a war with Iraq. Let's examine some of these people, and their backgrounds:

Sorry for not having updated in a while. (This seems to be happening to many bloggers.) I am currently in the middle of writing an essay. It is on a presentation given in my American Foreign Policy class last week by Sister Beth Murphy, a Dominican Sister from here in Springfield. Sister Beth spent time in Iraq, working to help the people of that country who have been suffering so much, especially since the early 1990's. I plan to update my blog later today. In the meantime, you might want to check out my earlier column with answers to the widely-circulated "Questions That Won't Be Asked About Iraq" from a speech by Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) last year. I was inspired to write this after reading other reponse columns Congressman Paul's questions by Libertarian leader Jacob Hornberger (president of the Future of Freedom Foundation) and Owen Courreges of Rice University, one of my fellow collegiate conservative bloggers. (Sorry, I don't yet know how to add that accent mark over the "e" in Courreges.) Just yesterday, I finished a new web article about Saddam Hussein and his actions during the Iran-Iraq war.

A special thanks to Owen for adding me to his blog's side listing! Even though I disagree with him about a war with Iraq, he was nice enough to link to me anyway. Muchas gracias, senor! :-)

Back to the essay! I shall return soon...

Update: This is what you get for updating your blog. After I posted and published this entry, Blogger.com ate up my archive dates listing on the left sidebar (now, as you can see, only the first week of archives are listed). Perhaps it's a good thing that Google has bought the company that runs Blogger.com; now, perhaps some of these bugs will be fixed. Anyway, you can see a listing of my archives (in a somewhat crude format, but oh well...) here.

Update update: [Hmmm... The archive listing seems to have returned. Oh well.]

Note: Several people have inquired as to when I am going to add a comments feature to this blog. That will be something that I will have to look at in the near future. However, with all the problems that Blogger.com is experiencing, I don't want to do anything to change the template code right now. (Currently, every time I click "Publish" on Blogger, it gives this error message: Error 503: Unable to load template file. We're working on this. Please try back later.) I don't even know if it will allow me to change my template. I will try to find out more about this.

Also, I seem to be somewhat under attack at Patrick Ruffini's website; or at least, my comments and blog postings are. (Contrast their caustic remarks to the civil discussion that I had with some of the nice folks over at Hoosier Review, or the nice back-and-forth dialogue I had with Owen Courreges and others at his blog.) Unfortunately, because I still haven't finished this darn essay, I won't be able to defend myself right now. I will be back soon, though, never fear...

Update: I now have an e-mail address for correspondence. It is uisconservative@yahoo.com. I may not get a chance to check it that often however, but I will try to check it from time to time.

More on the war:

There were several things that I had wanted to post concerning the issue of war and conservatism. Shortly after I posted that last entry, consisting of the latest installment of editorials against a war with Iraq from American conservatives, several new things occurred. On Tuesday, in my American Foreign Policy class, we had an exciting, informative, organized debate on whether to go to war with Iraq. There were two teams of four people each, with each making their case for or against the war. Someone else played the part of the President of the United States, while others played the part of Colin Powell, Karl Rove, and Donald Rumsfeld. I was the director of the CIA. In a very feisty debate-style format, those of us who were advisors to the President agressively questioned each side, and engaged in the debate ourselves. Of course, I strongly questioned the pro-war side, trying to get them to back up their case. At one point, someone on that side suggested that I was a "Saddam symphathizer." (More on that later.) Anyway, our President ended up making the decision to go to war.

In an interesting note, three of the students in that class were Executive Officers of College Republicans. Out of the three of us, only one supported the war, while two of us are opposing it. See below two good articles summarizing the conservative and Republican opposition to the war. (Both of these were on Thursday's edition of AntiWar.com, the conservative/libertarian website against intervention.)

Washington Times: Some conservatives still opposing the war
Pacific News Service: Anti-War Conservatives Bash Neocon Hawks

New! - Agape Press: Conservatives Against the War
New! - United for Peace: Military Officials, Republicans Speak Out Against the War

New! - Congressman John Duncan (R-TN): Conservatives Against a War with Iraq

As I wrote in this comment post on the Hoosier Review blog, more conservatives and Republicans need to say:

"Not in Our Name," either!

And it's:
One, Two, Three, Four:
We don't want your neocon war!

Five, Six, Seven, Eight:
We ain't gonna Bosniate!

(Just say NO! to the Leviathan state...)

In an update to my second January 13th entry, I listed the TownHall.com conservative columnists and the World Net Daily columnists who are opposing a war with Iraq. Now, I will give a partial listing of the organizations and policy institutes on the right which are opposing the war. (Note: Some of these groups may not have an official stance on the war, but have many members who are opposing it.)

NOTE: If you want your organization listed here, or if you feel that a group or person has been incorrectly listed, please drop a note here at this empty Hoosier Review comment board. (That's an old post, so I don't think anyone there would mind.) Please reserve that comment board only for corrections to this listing of organizations (not for any other comments). I will also, in the future, probably set up an e-mail address for correspondence to me.

Neocon Watch

Turning Tables

Well, it seems that what goes around, comes around. Many of the leading neoconservative commentators in America have, for the past several years, been doing a very good job of smearing those who get in the way of their agenda. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) Ironically, these commentators have been employing the same type of smear tactics and labeling that the Left has been using against conservatives, and continues to do today. The neocons have made it a habit of labeling traditional conservatives, libertarians, and some leftists as "anti-this" and "anti-that," and as haters of .... whomever or whatever, but now, some of them are the ones getting labeled. See this article in the Washington Times about how Republican leader and conservative activist Grover Norquist (President of Americans for Tax Reform) has accused Frank Gaffney, David Keene, and others of bigotry. I don't know whether these accusations by Mr. Norquist are true, and if they are not true, then what he has said is very wrong. However, it is unique to see those who are usually doing the smearing in the hot seat for a change.

To be fair...
Update: Right after this article from the Washington Times was published, there was a response to it at the home page of Mr. Gaffney's organization, the Center for Security Policy. I am trying to find that response statement at that site, but the front page has been updated several times since then. This might be the one. The current front page of the site also has another item responding to these accusations, with strong criticism of Mr. Norquist.

Here is Mr. Gaffney's response article in the Washington Times. And here is an article on Norquist from the Weekly Standard.

The home page of Citizen Soldier, a good organization, has also been updated with information on this controversy.

Update 2: I saw Ben Domenech's blog post about this a few days ago; he has updated that entry since then with some more information. Ben mentions that he watched Norquist talking about this on Fox News. That actually occured on February 7th on "The Big Story with Josh Gibson." I didn't see that show, but a transcript of it, obtained via Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe (c), has been posted here.

And with regards to Mr. Gaffney: I just noticed a couple days ago, when looking at the now-famous Chickenhawk Database, that he is listed there as having avoided military service due to, of all things, "zits." I tried looking up information on that, but was unable to find anything. Does anyone know what the story is on this? (That must have been one bad case of acne!)

Speaking of the chickenhawks, I came across something very amusing on the message board of the Illinois Leader (Illinois' conservative news source) a few days ago about our old friend, Rush Limbaugh. Rush was anti-war during the Clinton administration, but has been a cheerleader for this war, along with others who never served in the military. While someone at Hoosier Review posted a link to "amusing [pro-war] protest pictures" at Rush's website, a much funnier poem on "Limbaugh and the Chickenhawks" was posted here on the Illinois Leader's discussion board. Hillarious!

(Find out more about what kept Rush from serving in the military here at the popular Snopes.com site.)

January 18th - The day of protesting against war...

Today is the day that many antiwar protests are occuring throughout the nation (and the world). Unfortunately, many of these protests will probably be led by those on the far left, whose tactics make it easy for the neocons and warmongering globalists to label those who oppose war as "unpatriotic" or "America haters." This blog has been focusing on the conservative (and libertarian) opposition to war, globalism, and the Leviathan, and as I wrote in my Jan. 6th post: "If those leftists who are opposing the war with Iraq were really serious about persuading the public, they would either modify their tactics and themes, or else step aside and let the conservatives and libertarians lead the anti-war movement." Following the November elections, it is clear that the public is not in the mood for many of the underlying views of some of the war protestors; they will, however, listen to people such as U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE), the respected war veteran who received a higher percentage of the vote in the 2002 elections than any other Republican senator (among those who had opposition from a Democrat), and people such as Jack Kemp, the former GOP nominee for Vice-President. They will also pay attention to many of the Gulf War veterans and current and former U.S. military generals who have been opposing the war, such as General Anthony Zinni (the White House main man for Middle East affairs) and General Brent Scowcroft (who helped lead Operation Desert Storm, and was national security advisor to the first President Bush & President Gerald Ford), Colonel James Webb (Secretary of the Navy & Assistant Secretary of Defense during the Reagan Administration, who recently spoke against the war at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where the students and faculty were very receptive), and Col. David Hackworth (the famous American war hero, military expert, and "Defending America" columnist who has been decorated more times than anyone else alive). Below is some news coverage from the past couple days of the conservative and military opposition to the Iraq war:

Republican businessmen oppose the war:
NY Times article --- Philadelphia City Paper article --- KS City Star --- The American Conservative
Finally! An organized Republican opposition to the war...

Update: FYI - Edward Hamm, who is spearheading the Republican business leaders' antiwar effort, is on the Executive Committee of the Republican Leadership Council (RLC). He has also earlier appeared on several lists by liberal groups for being one of those GOP 'fat cat' big-money donors. Mother Jones magazine has him listed as #144 in their compilation of the Top 400 political campaign donors. Perhaps now some of those people feel differently about him.

To read the text of that full-page Wall Street Journal ad mentioned in those articles (the one that the Republican business leaders signed), go here to Bob Goodsell's site, or see an edited version here. The ad can be downloaded in PDF format here. And you can see the ad as a JPEG image here. Mr. Hamm actually spent $170,000 to purchase that advertisement.

I spent Friday night watching women
...and unfortunately, Phil Donahue as well.

On Friday, January 10th, the Donahue show on MSNBC featured the "Women of the Right" - the guests for that episode were former United States Treasurer Bay Buchanan, who is currently president of The American Cause, and a mentor for Young America's Foundation; Radio America show host Blanquita Cullum, a conservative commentator and writer, and Kellyanne Conway, president of The Polling Company, and political analyst for CNN. I had sent out an e-mail prior to the show informing people about it; I had recognized Bay when they showed the previews for the show, and it was said on the preview that they would be discussing the potential war with Iraq, the new Republican Congress, and other issues. Before the show, I was thinking that it would be good to see Bay present a more correct conservative view on the war, in contrast to the neoconservative view. And that is exactly what happened. See below an excerpt from the transcript of that show. These ladies also talked about the pardons and clemencies granted by our terrible, horrible, corrupt Governor George Ryan. (Expect that to be the subject of one of my next posts...)

Full transcript of the Donahue show for Friday, Jan. 10th: http://www.msnbc.com/news/858656.asp

Excerpt regarding the potential Iraq war:

DONAHUE takes on the women of the right starting right now.

PHIL DONAHUE, HOST: Good evening and welcome to DONAHUE, live from New York City.
Tonight I’m surrounded by women, which is nice work if you can get it.

We are debating today’s big stories. Just hours ago, the Pentagon approved deploying 35,000 troops to the Gulf. The United States condemned North Korea for dropping out of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

A lot going on, so let’s get started with our panel of conservative women. Please welcome Bay Buchanan, president of The American Cause. Blanquita Cullum is a syndicated radio host from Radio America. Kellyanne Conway is here, president of The Polling Company.

With growing reluctant from our allies, is President Bush making a mistake by pushing forward with war?

I ask you, Kellyanne.

KELLYANNE CONWAY, PRESIDENT, THE POLLING COMPANY: No.
DONAHUE: Come on.
CONWAY: There are two things that have happened that have really changed Americans’ opinion on war, particularly women.
If you look back at the Persian Gulf War just before that, in 1991, 67 percent of men, 45 percent women said they felt comfortable in going to war. It was a 22-point gender gap. Now, it has changed; 58 percent of women, 56 percent of men are supportive of it, because two things have happened.
No. 1, the events of 9/11 are seared in our consciousnesses. We were that attacked on American soil. This is not just hypothetical. We know people in this world hate Americans and will live to see us die. And, No. 2, the ascendancy of our president as a trusted commander in chief. Even the majority of people who didn’t vote for him and may not vote for him a short year from now support him in this effort.
DONAHUE: How about you, Blanquita?
BLANQUITA CULLUM, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: Absolutely the president is doing the right thing. The funniest thing is..
DONAHUE: Where do we get these hawks? You just can’t wait to go to war. Holy cow. Happy days are here again.
CULLUM: No. Pardonnez moi, Don Phillipe.
Let me tell you. It was back in 1998 that it was not a Republican committee that was headed up by Warren Rudman and Gary Hart that came out with the information about what was wrong with Iraq and the potential to actually harm us and the millions of people that were going to die. And the thing that boggles my mind, in that report, during a Democratic leadership, during the fact that the president saw that, they said it was not if; it was when.
And you had members like Congressman Floyd Spence, now deceased, who said he couldn’t sleep at night, because nobody would deal with the heavy lifting. So, now we have it in our ballpark and people are saying hawks? The Constitution doesn’t care about the budget. They care about the national defense and the security of the country.
DONAHUE: I would just ask this audience, you certainly know Bay Buchanan. How does she feel about the war? Tell me.
Don’t tell them, Bay.
She wants to go to war, right?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes!
(APPLAUSE)
CONWAY: Bay, you have a fan club. I love it.
CULLUM: You go, girl.
DONAHUE: Go ahead, Bay.
BAY BUCHANAN, PRESIDENT, THE AMERICAN CAUSE: I happen to take a totally different position here. I do not think that American soldiers, American military should be asked to go anywhere unless it is because of a threat to our-American individuals, our property, and our citizens.
And I do not see any imminent threat today whatsoever from Saddam Hussein. I think the president should be very cautious. I don’t mind that he talks and says that Saddam Hussein has got to step back on these weapons of mass destruction. I don’t mind the tough talking at all. But I don’t think you put our troops in danger when our people and our property are not threatened whatsoever at this time.
CULLUM: Oh, Bay. Oh.
BUCHANAN: So, I think he has got to be far more cautious.
And I also think you have to start looking at what happens if we do go to war and what happens afterwards? And I don’t think that has been carefully thought through. I think we have an extraordinarily volatile situation over there in the Middle East. And we are going to just throw it way open and we don’t know what the response or what’s going to happen.
CULLUM: I totally disagree.
DONAHUE: Aren’t you a little embarrassed that we are negotiating with North Korea and we’re going to attack Saddam?
CULLUM: Kim Jong Il, the guy that was dancing cheek to cheek with Madeleine Albright at the same time when you had defectors coming over here?
DONAHUE: Why don’t you want to go after him?
CULLUM: Well, I think we are going to have to deal with him because you have got the issue of plutonium and uranium.
Now, what is the little component that Saddam needs, Saddam and the evil two brothers, the sons? They need plutonium. Now, what is to say-they have had a longstanding relationship with Iraq. How do we know they don’t have the plutonium already?
BUCHANAN: We do know.
Blanquita, the key is this. For the last 10, 12 years, we have absolutely controlled Saddam Hussein. We have had him. We’ve watched him. He has not threatened or used any of these weapons of mass destruction. And our own CIA suggests that the only time they believe he will use them is if we threaten his life or the livelihood of his own people.
CONWAY: He has used them against his people.
(CROSSTALK)
BUCHANAN: That was not in the last 12 years.
CONWAY: Talk about a racist. Here’s a man who uses gas to destroy minority populations.
BUCHANAN: We should have taken him out 10 years ago.
CONWAY: No doubt about that.

Guess who is currently the Young America's Foundation 'Speaker of the Month'?

The YAF 'Speaker of the Month' for January

Young America's Foundation is a great organization that has been helping conservative and Republican groups on campuses across the nation in their battle against the leftism which is so predominant in the academic area. I am a member of YAF's Club 100, which is the organization for college students who wish to be involved in conservative activism at their school.

Some updates with regards to my previous entry on war and conservatives:

After I wrote that post, which contained a Christmas Day anti-war column by conservative Republican leader Jack Kemp, a new piece by Mr. Kemp appeared in my local newspaper (last Thursday). Here is Mr. Kemp's latest article, also opposing the war with Iraq:
The Danger of Stimulating Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation
Threatening war against Iraq while simultaneously dealing with the North Korean crisis through diplomacy may have the unintended effect of encouraging small, weak nations to obtain nukes and chemical-biological weapons as fast as they possibly can in order to gain leverage.

From correspondence at the Hoosier Review blog:

Brian Balta, a left-of-center columnist at Hoosier Review (the Indiana University student blog) who is opposing the war with Iraq, posted an OP-ED from the New York Times by Warren Christopher; Mr. Balta entitled that blog entry: "An ex-Sec. of State Agrees with Me." See my rather lengthy response here at the comments section of that entry (it is the 4th comment; scroll down or click here for the direct link to my comment). In my comment post, I point out the conservative opposition to the war with Iraq. I included a link to Jack Kemp's OP-ED column on Iraq which was published in my newspaper on Christmas Day. It is also currently the second article featured at the home page of Empower America, the conservative organization headed by Mr. Kemp.
Jack Kemp
Call Saddam Hussein's Bluff
A persuasive case has not yet been made to go to war with Iraq.

Excerpt:
I agree with Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., who said on "Face the Nation" Sunday that a persuasive case has not yet been made to go to war with Iraq. As the senator wisely observed, "This is not just about Iraq ... it is about the entire world." Invading Iraq will have reverberations around the globe, and we should not go to war based upon the reports of Iraqi defectors or other indirect evidence. I believe by sending our intelligence agents into Iraq, we have an opportunity to call Saddam's bluff and see firsthand whether or not our suspicions are true...

From my comments in that above-mentioned Balta post:
...Wouldn't it be nice to have had Jack Kemp as Vice-President currently, rather than a warmonger like Dick Cheney?

Jack Kemp was a great conservative leader in the broad-based antiwar movement during the Clinton Administration... See here the press release in which Kemp blasts Bill Clinton's illegal war in Kosovo (along with many conservatives, libertarians, and liberals), and here, where Mr. Kemp questions President Clinton's 'wag the dog' bombings of Sudan, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Once again, you can read my full comments to Mr. Balta's post here. If those leftists who are opposing the war with Iraq were really serious about persuading the public, they would either modify their tactics and themes, or step aside and let the conservatives and libertarians lead the anti-war movement. I have mentioned before (see my Oct. 10th blog post) about how opposing this war is consistant with traditional American conservatism, and how it is the neoconservatives who have been the main ones pushing for endless warfare and the establishment of a "New World Order." I also gave a summary of this in a comment post to a Nov. 11th Campus Nonsense blog entry by a U of Iowa College Republican. It mentions different groups on the Right which are supporting the war, and those right-wing groups that are opposing the war.

Let it be known:

This is a neocon war.

War Watch
Is Bush Backing Off on the Iraq Attack?
Conservative columnist Bob Novak has caused a great deal of speculation and controversy with his latest column, in which he suggests that the Bush Administration may be turning away from the neocon agenda, and leaning against and invasion of Iraq. Now, some commentators - conservative and liberal - are suggesting that we may not be going to war after all. Traditional conservatives and libertarians must be very hopeful about this; Colin Powell seems to be making a comeback, after having being marginalized by neoconservatives such as Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz.

On November 14, these two editorials were featured on USA Today... They are supposed to offer opposing viewpoints, but there is some concurrence.

I wrote this post last Thursday (November 14th):

Liberty Watch

War vs. Freedom? - This is part of a debate on the great, new TechCentralStation conservative website.

In related news, I sadly just found out something terrible:

House passes "Homeland Security" bill

This is the bill to create the new Department of Homeland Security. As a conservative, it is so sad for me to see that only 6 Republicans in the House voted against this bill (the same number that voted against the unconstitutional Iraq war resolution). See the roll call here for this bill, H.R. 5710.

It is refreshing to see, however, that even some of my fellow conservative bloggers and commentators who disagree with me on the Iraq war agree with me on this issue. I remember being glad to see Josh Claybourn's post on October 3rd on this topic, in which he linked to his column on the same subject. Brilliant 13-year-old columnist Kyle Williams also deals with this topic in his July 20th column. [Update: Kyle's latest column is also on this subject...]

Do Bush supporters realize that this department, if created, would still be around after Bush leaves office? I wonder how the Republicans would have reacted if President Clinton (or Al Gore) were to propose an identical version of what Bushy-boy is proposing... Well, that could be said about many things, actually; our current "Republican" president seems to be getting away with a lot of things that would never have been allowed had he had a "D" next to his name.

To find out more on why this new bureacratic agency is a bad idea, go here, here, here, here, or here.

I wrote this post last Friday (November 15th):

I thought Larry Elder was a conservative libertarian.

Many people have read Larry Elder's columns, as well as his famous book, The Ten Things You Can't Say in America. Elder has long been considered a conservative/libertarian columnist.

Larry Elder, along with conservatives, libertarians, and liberals, opposed Bill Clinton's illegal war in Kosovo. In the last presidential election, recognizing George W. Bush's support of Big Government, Elder decided to "waste his vote" on Harry Browne. Larry Elder also had a good column on September 27th blasting Bush's ultra-liberal education proposals.

However, in Larry's latest column on Nancy Pelosi, he surprises me. He criticizes Nancy Pelosi for being too anti-war. However, during the Clinton Administration, Nancy Pelosi was pro-war, while the Republicans were leading the antiwar movement. In fact, in the 1996 elections, the Republican Party nominated the now-famous conservative libertarian author and columnist Justin Raimondo [see his campaign site here], the editorial director of AntiWar.com, the conservative/libertarian, Old Right website against intervention. (See my comments on this in response to a post at the Old Miss Conservative blog.) Yes, those were different wars; however, many conservatives (and libertarians) also opposed the first Gulf War (including paleo-conservatives Pat Buchanan, Joe Sobran, and Sam Francis, conservative movement leader Russell Kirk, the Constitution Party's William K. Shearer, Christopher Layne of the CATO Institute, consitutionalist Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), the John Birch Society, and others...). In addition, Larry Elder seems to criticize Nancy Pelosi for opposing the new bureacratic "Department of Homeland Security." (For information on that, see my previous post above.) Then again, I see that in his column, Elder is criticizing the reasons for which Nancy Pelosi and the liberals opposed this agency (union and labor-related concerns); maybe Elder also opposes this new department, but for the right reasons, like other conservatives and libertarians do. I will have to look that up. Many of Elder's criticisms of Pelosi are legitimate though, and the current points being made by conservatives - that Pelosi's liberalism is going to make the Democratic Party look bad - will likely turn out to be true. The Dems would have been much better off choosing more moderate Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. (D-TN), who is a member of the Congressional Blue Dog Coalition, instead.

Update: From Jenn Gray's blog (*Girl on the Right*), I found this Washington Times editorial from last week that has a good summary of Pelosi's liberal voting record and views. I wish though, that I could strike from this article the last sentence from paragraph 7 (on the unconstitutional NAFTA, WTO, and "fast-track" agreements), as well as paragraph 8 (on war). But alas, the Times does not ask me to edit their editorials.

Blogger Problems... Again

Last night, I spent a great deal of time online, communicating with other bloggers, trying to resolve some archiving problems. The problem that I had been having was that, on the left side of my blog, where it listed the archive dates, it was listing only every other week; it was skipping weeks.
For example, it listed:
09/15/2002 - 09/21/2002
10/13/2002 - 10/19/2002
10/27/2002 - 11/02/2002

My archive pages for [9/22/2002 - 9/28/2002] and [10/06/2002 - 10/12/2002] do exist, but they are not listed on the side of my index page with the other archives. Worse yet, they are not listed when I go to edit my blog, so there is no way that I can update the posts on those pages for my archives. For example, my conservative anti-war post of October 10th was updated several times after I posted it. But the only way that someone can see the entire, updated post, is to go to my index page and scroll down. The permalink to that post contains the older version of the post, which contains some errors, and lacks the updates.

I tried to fix the problem last night, but it doesn't seem to have worked. I think the only way to save those posts for my archive is to retype them, and repost them now. Below are my two posts from October 10th.

Re-Post of my 2nd entry from October 10th:

Wow! Yesterday, my blog received a total of 16 HITS! (That's somewhat high for a beginning blog.) Thanks to all those who linked here.

I had earlier been been meaning to include, in this blog, the letter below... Right now, as I type, the House is voting on the Iraq resolution.

Letter Written on Tuesday afternoon, October 8:

(I wrote this to the MSNBC show Buchanan and Press, right after viewing their "College Debate" on the Iraq war. The "debate" was between the President of College Republicans at George Washington University and the President of College Democrats. The College Democrat pres was clearly very nervous, and froze up several times during the "debate.")

Edited version of letter to Buchanan and Press (Tuesday afternoon):

Dear Pat & Bill:

I am active in College Republicans at my University, and I have been adamantly opposing the upcoming war with Iraq. It is unfortunate that the college debate that we just saw was between the head of College Republicans and the head of College Democrats. This furthers the myth that "anti-war" is a liberal viewpoint, and being a "war hawk" is a conservative value. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am a strong conservative, but I am from the School of the Old Right - I am NOT a neoconservative. The neocons have entered the conservative movement and conned everyone into believing that conservatism involves the support of endless warfare, government expansion, and empire. True conservatism is pro-liberty, pro-sovereignty, pro-Constitution, pro-America First, pro-free markets, anti-state, anti-Leviathan, anti-war, and anti-New World Order.

It is time for all traditional conservatives, paleo-conservatives, pro-liberty Republicans, constitutionalists, and libertarians to reclaim the American Right.

For more information on these issues, visit AntiWar.com and LewRockwell.com. Contact the Rockford Institute in Illinois, the Ludwig Von Mises Institute in Auburn, AL, or the office of Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX). And of course, subscribe to Pat's new paleo-conservative magazine, The American Conservative. Go Pat Go!

Update: See this article from NewsMax:
Republicans Who Voted Against Iraq Resolution Tell Why
There are some liberals in there, such as Connie Morella and Amo Houghton, but congratulations to pro-liberty, pro-sovereignty, constitutional conservative Congressmen Ron Paul (R-TX), John Hostettler (R-IN), and John Duncan, Jr. (R-TN)!

From what I see at his official home page, Congressman Hostettler just became one of my most favorite House members. It was neat to see Congressman Ron Paul, known for being Congress's constitutional adherent, debate Sean Hannity on Fox News. It is very interesting to see that the liberal Democrats, who consistently oppose "strict constructionist" federal judge appointees, are now making conservative constitutional arguments against the Iraq war resolution, while many Republicans and conservatives like Sean Hannity, who would ordinarily be "strict constructionists," are forced to use the liberal, "living document" constitutional viewpoint in order to justify the war resolution. With all of these hypocritical role reversals and ideological contradictions, it is great that we have true-blue, consistent conservatives, like Congressman Paul, to guide us through this time of uncertainty. Also see the top quotes at the website of the Constitution Party on war and the Constitution. The recently-formed, populist conservative "America First Party" has also taken a stance against the Iraq war; see their August 27th press release. Now, if the media would only start focusing on the conservative (and libertarian) opposition to the Iraq war and war resolution, instead of the just covering the left.

Update 2: Speaking of Sean Hannity, and the conservatives who opposing this upcoming war, see this article by conservative Republican columnist and national defense/security expert David T. Pyne, Esq:
David Pyne's Weekly Defense Article: Hannitize This
To Sean Hannity: A Challenge to Debate You on Iraq
It is so refreshing to see that I am not the only one who is unhappy with Mr. Hannity's disregard for the pro-liberty, pro-sovereignty, conservative voices against intervention in Iraq. David Pyne, currently the Executive Vice President of the Virginia Republican Assembly, is a national security expert who works in the US defense establishment responsible for the countries of the former Soviet Union and the Middle East among others. Mr. Pyne has briefed Army transformation and related issues at the Pentagon. He is also a licensed attorney and former Army Reserve Officer. In addition, he holds an MA in National Security Studies from Georgetown University. He is also a member of the Center for Emerging National Security Affairs based in Washington, D.C. I'll put more stuff related to Veterans Day here soon... Right now, I have an essay to write for my POS class (Intro to Comparitive and International Politics). The essay question?
The authors of your textbook advanced the following proposition: The delay in intervention by the international community in the Bosnian civil war, advertently or inadvertently, allowed for favorable conditions to emerge that paved the way for peace, stability, and the emergence of a consociational, or ethnic power sharing, electoral democracy. Discuss and critique this proposition. In your conclusion explore the prospects for the Bosnian government, notwithstanding peacemakers, that might either result in its further fragmentation or its consolidation as a stable consociational democracy.

I'm not sure what to say about the first part of that question (or the second part, for that matter). I am anti-interventionist in general (from a conservative perspective - scroll down for my October 10th post), but I don't know if the above proposition is true.

Below are some interesting articles on Bosnia...

America, Keep Out of Bosnia! People in plush offices are thirsting for blood, which our youth will have to supply. Why? - Murray Rothbard, 8/1/92

Well, today is "United Nations Day." Those who I have discussed politics with before know that you don't want to get me started on the topics of the U.N., World Government, and the "New World Order."

I posted comments on the U.N. at the blogs of The Hoosier Review (Indiana U.), Paul Musgrave, and others. See my blog comments at Patrick Carver's blog (The Ole Miss Conservative), in which I suggest that he declare his site a "UN-Free Zone," like some towns and websites have been doing recently. (Actually, in my comments on Patrick's blog, I accidently typed the wrong blog name, as you can see in his response. Sorry Patrick!... So many blogs to read... and so little time.)

Anyway, I am now officially declaring "University Blog" a UN-Free Zone.

Find out more about how to declare your website, dorm room, house, car, or community a UN-Free Zone, see the following:

Note: I have been having big problems updating this blog lately. My computer does not seem to work very well with this blogger service. I've also had some very difficult tests this week. I have some posts that I typed within the past week, but was not able to post; I will post some of them now (if this blogger lets me). I plan to update more frequently in the future.

Previous posts never posted:

Written on September 30:
Toricelli Talks
Several of my fellow young bloggers have commented on US Senator Bob Toricelli's (D-NJ) withdrawl from the Senate race, and his speech in which he emotionally announced that he will not seek re-election. "When did we become so unforgiving?..." he said, tearfully. I don't know about you, but that sounded kinda corny. "When did you ask to be forgiven?..." Rush Limbaugh responded.

See Ben Domenech's thoughts on this whole mess, and his listing of the top five most contested U.S. Senate races; and then read about what Toricelli did here.

Also, please see my listing (click here) of the hottest U.S. Senate races. These races will determine whether the Republicans are able to take back the U.S. Senate.
As you can see, there are 6 vulnerable Democrat incumbents. There are also 6 Republican-held seats in which the elections may be close; these consist of 3 vulnerable Republican incumbents, and 3 Republican Senators who are retiring.
This page was created a couple months ago, so some things have changed since then. For example, some of the primaries have occured. Sadly, U.S. Senator Bob Smith (R-NH) has lost his bid for re-election, after being defeated in the primary by John Sununu. Senator Smith is a strong, principled conservative, and one of the greatest members of the Senate. The GOP Establishment does not like him, and pushed for his defeat. Shame on them!!

I also have a similar page set up for the U.S. House races. More on that later.

Reclaiming the Right
Here is another post that I had written previously for this blog; it was written on September 28:
(Note: This will be a very conservative blog, but it certainly will NOT be neoconservative. In fact, this is perhaps the only youth conservative blog that is taking a firm stance against the neocon agenda. (See my 9/15 post on the neocons and their New World Order agenda.)

The great conservative columnist Charley Reese has written a good column on neocons (with a very true title). And also be sure to check out Bob Novak's latest column on the U.S. and Iraq (from the Conservative News site). It seems that, despite the bandwagon push to join the neocons, some conservatives are still bravely holding out against the war. This probably does not make Sean Hannity too happy. Last night, he and the others on his show almost totally ignored the antiwar conservatives. The Fox News website was not able to ignore them, though; here is a news piece on the new paleo-conservative magazine, The American Conservative. Tony Blankley's latest column in the Washington Times also covers this magazine. There was another Washington Times article about it as well.

Also see this article by paleoconservative Kevin Tuma about conservativism and the problems of the GOP. I have not completely read through this column, so I can't say whether I agree entirely with in or not. EtherZone is a great site for traditional conservative news and views.

Iraq to Accept Weapons Inspectors

"Iraq unconditionally accepted the return of U.N. weapons inspectors late Monday, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said."

Update: The White House isn't buying it.

Neither is fellow blogger Josh Claybourn. Josh is also affiliated with The Hoosier Review, a great news source from Indiana University. Also check out the blog of Hoosier Review columnist Paul Musgrave.

I had tried to add a table with organized links to the left side of my home page, but that did not work well with this template and this blogger service. I might try again soon once I'm more familiar with this system.

That's all for now! Goodbye and goodnight.

A secret blueprint for world domination prepared for top associates of George
Bush over a month before the 2000 presidential election called for an attack on
Iraq and outlined actions designed to create a "Pax Americana."

This is the startling charge leveled by Australia's Sunday Herald, which
reports that the document obtained by the newspaper shows that the Bush
administration came into office determined to pursue policies that would allow
America to control the destiny of the world.

Writing in the Herald, Neil Mackay reports that the document was drawn up for
Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz (now Rumsfeld's deputy), Gov. Jeb
Bush and Lewis Libby (now Cheney's chief of staff). Mackay wrote that the

Kosovo, Iraq, and War: Ann Coulter Gets it Half Right

The beautiful conservative columnist and author Ann Coulter wrote an anti-war/pro-war column a few weeks ago on war, covering the Kosovo War, the Iraq war, and liberals. It is great to see that conservative columnists are still blasting Bill Clinton's illegal war in Kosovo (see two more columns below), but I wish more of them would stop toeing the neo-con line on Iraq and other issues.

A new paleo-conservative magazine, The American Conserative, will start publication soon. With the neoconservative establishment and the New World Order crowd pushing us closer and closer to war with Iraq, and many conservative commentators and leaders (such as Ann Coulter) following suit, an "Old Right" publication is vitally needed.

To subscribe to The American Conservative at the special pre-publication charter rate, go here.
See conservative columnist Dr. Scott McConnell's article about this:
Conservatives Against the War Party

Also, take a look at a couple of the somewhat-recent columns on Clinton's failed Kosovo War:
Don Feder: West Hauted By Balkans Blunder, 12/2/01
Julia Gorin: We Didn't Want to Know, Remember?, 5/23/02

And, if you want to know about the connection between the KLA (our "allies" in Clinton's war) and the terrorists who attacked us, go here.

"In war, truth is the first casualty..."
Well, here it goes. This will be an archive of my past blog entries [from my main blog] on the issues of war and foreign policy. I will try to keep this warblog updated with an archive of my pertinent posts. My main blog with be updated regularly.
